And the lands were Dreaming... (2015)

And the lands were Dreaming... is Parisa Sabet's composition for clarinet, piano and voice commissioned by Iranian clarinetist, Anoush Taba`i. Each movement is based on an Iranian poem. The first and third movements are based on excerpts of two poems by Sohrab Sepehri, and the second movement is based on a poem by M.R. Zaman. And the Lands Were Dreaming... was premiered in Spring 2016.

The poems follow a familiar cycle of love. In the first movement, the narrator and the lover are together but their relationship is unfulfilling; the lover’s eyes are afar and the narrator is “full of loneliness”. By the second movement, the narrator has taken the relationship for granted and becomes separated from the lover in a game of hide and seek. In the third movement, the narrator urges the lover to come back, claiming that in life “nothing is sweeter than a look moist with love!”

The music follows a similar progression. The first movement starts with a dark, unfamiliar tune full of chromatic intervals and sound effects generated from inside the piano. Through the second and the third movements, the music slowly finds a more harmonious form.

شب تنهایی خوب

گوش كن ، دورترين مرغ جهان مي خواند. گوش كن ، جاده صدا مي زند از دور قدم هاي ترا. چشم تو زينت تاريكي نيست‌. پلك ها را بتكان ، كفش به پا كن ، و بيا. و بيا تا جايي ، كه پر ماه به انگشت تو هشدار دهد و زمان روي كلوخي بنشيند با تو و مزامير شب اندام ترا، مثل يك قطعه آواز به خود جذب كنند. پارسايي است در آنجا كه ترا خواهد گفت : بهترين چيز رسيدن به نگاهي است كه از حادثه عشق تر است‌
